Doing fieldwork

Fieldwork is a rewarding and exciting activity, but requires prior planning and forethought to be most effective. This section outlines relevant techniques for recording historic rural settlement remains in the field. The advice covers the range of methods you might find useful to survey and record a site, whether you choose to do a basic survey or a more detailed study.

More comprehensive guidance can be found in our publication A Practical Guide to Recording Archaeological Sites.
